There’s something about Memphis that already feels like history is breathing through it… and on Juneteenth, that feeling gets louder.

This year, I spent Juneteenth right in the heart of the city—surrounded by community, culture, music, and a kind of joy that feels both celebratory and sacred. And if you’ve ever been to Memphis, you already know: when this city shows up, it shows out.

✊🏽 A Soft Reflection: What Juneteenth Really Means

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Let that sit for a second.

Freedom came… but it was delayed.

And that’s why Juneteenth isn’t just a celebration—it’s a remembrance. It’s about truth, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward real freedom.

Being in Memphis, especially near the Lorraine Motel (now the National Civil Rights Museum), adds layers to that understanding. You’re not just celebrating—you’re standing on ground that holds stories.

🎶 What Was Happening Around Memphis This Weekend

Memphis didn’t treat Juneteenth like a single-day moment—it stretched into a full weekend of intentional gatherings.

Here’s a glimpse of what was going on:

🌻 National Civil Rights Museum Community Day Free admission, live music, food trucks, and activities—this felt like the heartbeat of the city. People weren’t just visiting… they were connecting.

🎷 The Jukewell Sessions (Downtown) A night vibe with music, drinks, and that laid-back Memphis energy. Perfect for unwinding after a reflective day.

🌿 Juneteenth Kickback @ Showtime Food Park Music, food, and a “just pull up” type of energy. One of those spaces where nobody feels like a stranger.

🎬 Junteenth Film Block Party (Where I Went) A creative twist—celebrating Black stories through film and community gathering.

🛍️ For the Girls Market @ Crosstown Brewing Company Black women-owned businesses, handmade goods, soft life energy, and community support all in one place.

🥕 Black Farmers’ Market Opening DayFresh produce, local vendors, and a reminder that ownership and sustainability are part of freedom too.

☕ Blends & Brews: Juneteenth Edition
Coffee, conversation, and culture—because not every celebration has to be loud to be powerful.

🌸 A “Traveling With Trinkets” Moment

What I loved most about this weekend wasn’t just the events…

It was the in-between moments.

Sitting on the grass watching families laugh.
Seeing people dressed in red, black, and green.
Hearing music echo down the street while someone two feet away tells a story about their grandmother.

That’s the kind of travel I’m learning to appreciate more—
not rushed, not forced… just felt.

🕯️ Today’s Trinket Treat

A soft-life essential.

After a full day of walking through Memphis, reflecting, and being in community… this is the kind of candle you light when you get back to your space. It’s grounding, calming, and perfect for journaling or winding down.

✨ Final Thoughts

Memphis gave me a Juneteenth that felt balanced—
a mix of celebration, education, community, and softness.

And if you ever get the chance to experience this city during Juneteenth…

don’t just go for the events.

Go for the feeling.

Go for the history.

Go for the moments that don’t make it on the flyer.
